Which type you choose is a personal choice. Many like the body conforming properties of a latex or memory foam mattress while others don't like how it feels at all and prefer the traditional inner spring system.
Whether or not a machine can do a better job of choosing your mattress than your own judgment is debatable but maybe it can? After all, when choosing a mattress you're supposed to lie down on it for at least 15 minutes, try out your various sleep positions, and, ideally, lay down on it in your pajamas - or whatever else you sleep in. Doing this is not easy as most consumers feel very self conscious when lying down on a mattress in a busy department store.
Realistically, there are just too many variables in coil design, function, and durability for consumers to understand what they are getting without spending days on coil research. However, you can be assured that all of the premium mattresses like Simmons and Kingsdown have a good innerspring unit. So, if you want a quality mattress that will give you a good night's sleep you should buy a mattress from one of the big, reputable companies and spend the most you can afford. But each mattress does feel different so you need to be sure that you choose the right one for you.
