I really have to disagree on this. In Europe, boxsprings are almost unheard of and we don't seem to hear them complaining. Also, with a mattress like a Stearns and Foster, that is sometimes more than 12" thick and needs two people to carry it, it really ought to be good enough to support the sleeper. Other companies, selling latex and memory foam mattresses, don't recommend a boxspring, so why Stearns and Foster recommends one for its innerspring and latex versions is debatable. I sometimes wonder if it's just a ploy on making more money by making customers believe they need this 'extra' support.
Campers may use various sorts of pumps. Many camping air mattresses are sold with an electric or manual pump for you to quickly fill up the airbed. Perhaps the best option is buying a camping air mattress with rechargeable pump. You may also get an air mattress with a separate electrical pump, if the built-in pump is not present. Another way is to use hand pump, but be ready then for a hard work to make the mattress ready, so it's better to avoid it if possible.
Futon bunk beds are another bed where choice of bedding needs to be right in order to keep them looking tidy. Futons need a gripper under the mattress so it doesnt slide when it is in the couch position. There are also futon covers that look just like a couch with colorful upholstery and designs. They may come in faux leather, faux suede, denim, and even genuine leather. These make a great alternative to a couch for small apartments or dorm rooms with the sleeping area right above.
