Memory Foam is something developed by NASA which has since spread into the consumer markets. One of the most popular uses of memory foam is in bedding. If you push a hand into memory foam it will leave an impression of the hand which will then stay for a bit and slowly return to the flat, normal state. If you sleep on a pad of memory foam then it will leave an impression of your body in the surface. The advantages of memory foam are that it provides excellent support to the parts that need it most. In good quality toppers you will even find that the density rating (how long it takes for something to 'sink' into it) changes in the middle, giving more support to the torso which is heavier then the legs.

Of course toppers do add a little height to your bed. If your fitted sheets are stretched as they are they might not be able to fit on the bed any longer. You may need to get extra sheets if you decide to add a topper. If your sheets are important to you, check if they will fit before buying the topper. Most sheets will fit with a stretch and some toppers aren't quite the size of the bed to enable easier fitting. It is something to be aware of.
Manufacturers usually offer mattresses in firm, medium or soft. This is often a personal choice, although a bed that is too soft may lead to back and posture problems, and if the bed is too hard it can cause pain in your hips and shoulders. A mattress may also be described as 'orthopedic' but this does not mean it is designed especially for the back. This only means that it is the firmest mattress in the range so do not be deceived by this when you are choosing a bed.
